Guy Ritchie casts Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law as Sherlock Holmes and Watson
So, this is an interesting piece of casting. In a press conference, Guy Ritchie has announced that Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man) and Jude Law (Alfie) have signed on to his latest production, tentatively titled “Sherlock Holmes”, set for 2009. Now that is an inventive title.
The various rumours I’ve heard are that it’s to be produced by Joel Silver (the man behind The Matrix, Die Hard & Lethal Weapon movies) and will feature the largest budget Ritchie’s ever worked with. OK… those aren’t rumours, Ritchie said as much himself. What is still a rumour is that Downey Jr’s Holmes will be a cocaine addict and that the majority of the actual ”thinking’ will be done by Jude Law’s Dr Watson. This is an oft-told assumption people have drawn from Conan-Doyle’s work and it’ll be interesting to see it play out on the screen.
Downey Jr is still tearing up screens in Tropic Thunder and Law’s next film will be Heath ledger’s last film: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Whilst on the subject of Sherlock Holmes; Will Ferrell (Anchorman) and Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) have their own film on the same subject coming out in 2009. Theirs, however, will be a comedy.
