Waiting for… Shantaram!

You probably have not read the autobiographical book “Shantaram” by Gregory David Roberts.

I guess most people haven’t – but Johnny Depp has - and he agrees with me. In fact, he liked the book so much that he (if I am right) bought the rights on the book and wants to star in a film about it. This was originally planned to come out in 2008, but as many other good films has been postponed due to the writers’ strike – plus I think the Monsoon in India played a role in the delay too.

What made this project especially exciting for me when I first read about it, was the fact that the director was going to be no other than Bruce Robinson of “Withnail and I” fame… Whether he is still going to direct the film – or whether it is ever going to be filmed at all – I don’t know –so maybe you should go and read the book meanwhile…

As mentioned above, Shantaram is the story of Gregory David Roberts who after being locked up for armed robberies (that he committed to support his heroin addiction) breaks out of the prison and via a couple of en-route stops manages to escape to India (in 1982), where he first lives in a slum and then works for the Bombay mafia. In-between he fights a war in Afghanistan, acts in films, gets locked up some more, smuggles passports etc. Although he is not always on the right side of the law, he is very likeable. That, the storyline and the amazing characters he meets make this the best book that I have read about India ever.

Go-on Johnny! Hurry up!
